1. Time

In fact, you don’t need to pay much attention to the time when practicing calligraphy, as long as you have paper and pen in front of you. If you are a student, you can write during class time to refresh your mind. You can also write when you first sit down to calm your mind. You can also write to relieve your mood when you can’t think of what to do. In short, as long as you have a heart to practice calligraphy and always have pen and paper on your desk, you can use all kinds of free time to practice calligraphy.

2. Confidence

Some people have plenty of time, but don't sit down and practice. The reason is probably because they didn't practice well before and have lost confidence now. If so, please don’t be discouraged, I will give you confidence below. If you have confidence now, there will be no problem.

3. Method, the most important thing is method!

Method 1: It is best not to start with regular script.

Mental method: When many people start practicing calligraphy, they always ask for the opinions of others and teachers. Most of the answers are to choose copybooks first and learn from Ou Liuyan. But these are calligraphy calligraphy, and the calligraphy strokes are rigorous. If you want to write well, it will be difficult to achieve results without enough time. This causes most people to lose confidence because they cannot see any signs of progress during practice.

The main reason for losing confidence due to little effect is that if you start practicing in regular script, the effect will not be strengthened, but will be constantly interfered with. Why do you say this way?

While we are practicing calligraphy, we also have to face various writing tasks. Teachers have to write lesson plans and write on the blackboard every day. Students have to do homework and exercises every day. This must be written with speed in mind, so it is impossible to use strict regular script when completing these tasks. If we practice calligraphy in regular script, but doodling at other times, then the effectiveness of the practice can be imagined.

Tips for practicing calligraphy should start with running script:

If you start with running script, you will use running script when practicing, and you will also use running script when writing lesson plans and doing homework, so you can achieve the effect of applying what you have learned. This is the most practical approach. If you choose to practice cursive writing, you can practice it consciously at any time during your daily writing, and you can discover your progress at any time, thus continuously increasing your confidence in calligraphy practice.

Tip 2 for practicing calligraphy: first practice the layout of the frame, and then practice the brushwork:

Some people fail to practice calligraphy well, and the reason is that they have not grasped the key to practicing calligraphy.

First, please observe how modern buildings are built. Modern buildings often adopt frame structures. Concrete is first poured into beams, columns and floor slabs, then brick walls are laid, and finally decoration is done. The structure of beams and columns determines the shape of a building. No matter how luxurious the decoration, it is difficult to cover up structural defects.

Similarly, the formation process of a good word should be like this. In fact, the key to whether a word can give people a feeling of beauty lies in the structure of the strokes, or the layout of the strokes. The spacing of the strokes is reasonable and the layout is appropriate, which is a good character. As for hidden things, center forwards, flankers, priorities, etc., you can ignore them all. If you don't believe it, just look at the "bold letters" or "small circles" in the newspaper or on your computer. The strokes of these fonts are the same thickness from beginning to end, and there is no brushwork to speak of, but this does not affect their beauty.

In other words, the so-called brushwork, for a word, is equivalent to decorating a house. The house can be decorated classically or elegantly. Similarly, under the given frame layout of a character, it is decorated with different brushwork, resulting in the distinction between regular script, Wei stele, Song script, running script, etc.

Therefore, when practicing calligraphy, you should first practice the layout of calligraphy and figure out how to lay it out. It’s not too late to start practicing calligraphy once you have a blueprint for each character in your mind. But now, when some people first start practicing calligraphy, they don't know what to do, and they only care about the writing skills. They focus on how to exert force and how to frustrate every day, which is in vain and without success. Over time, they lose the confidence to practice calligraphy.

Tip 3 for practicing calligraphy. Practice one word every day:

Please see clearly, you are practicing a word, not writing a word.

The requirement is to be able to copy the character from tracing to copying, until the shape of the character on the copybook is the same as the one on the copybook. At this point you can move to the next word. Of course, you don’t need to worry about practicing all three thousand commonly used characters in this way. As the saying goes, practice makes perfect, and quantitative changes will lead to qualitative changes. As long as you can think more, summarize more, and pay more attention to the layout of Chinese characters during practice. After a certain period of time, you will be able to understand the rules and master them, and your good calligraphy will be freely revealed from your pen.
