Gel pens are often also called signature pens or water pens (actually there is a difference, fountain pens are water-based pens). It is a pen between water-based (fountain pen) and oil-based (ballpoint pen). If it is just For daily writing, gel pens have completely surpassed fountain pens. This should be a consensus.

What about practicing calligraphy?

Because gel pens have the following advantages:

1) Stable. This is my favorite part. As long as you are accustomed to a certain pen of a certain brand, no matter how many pens you try, the writing experience will be the same. If you like it, you will always like it, better than a fountain pen. Much more stable.

2) Convenience. You can take it with you wherever you go, and you don’t have to worry about ink leakage or loss. At worst, you can replace it with one or two, and now you won’t feel bad for just one or two yuan.

3) Comfortable to write. Gel pens rarely have clogging, ink smearing, or paper scratches.

4) Strong expressiveness.

5) Cheap. Not much to say, it’s there for all to see.

Therefore, I personally prefer gel pens when practicing calligraphy, but there are a few things to pay attention to:

1) The thickness of the tip of the gel pen.

Common pen tip thicknesses are 0.38, 0.5, 0.7, 1.0, etc. The thicker the pen tip, the stronger the expressive power, and conversely, the thinner the pen tip, the worse the expressive power.

The main purpose of calligraphy practice is for daily writing, so I prefer to use 0.5mm or 0.7mm gel pens. Teacher Zhao Hexin uses 1.0 gel pens. The handwriting he writes is indeed very coquettish and amazing. I am also envious of it. hatred.

However, the water output of the 1.0 pen is too large and difficult to control, which undoubtedly increases the difficulty of practice. Moreover, the requirements for pens and paper are higher, and many of them are not applicable. For me, the expressiveness of 0.5 or 0.7 is enough. Let’s take a word with fewer strokes and a word with more strokes to feel it. The original picture:

Horizontal, vertical, strokes, strokes, hooks, folds and dots are all commonly used strokes that can be expressed very well.

If it is 0.38 or even finer, it will be difficult to express. More importantly, it is much thinner than the strokes of the copybooks we buy every day.

(2) Pen tip types are divided into diamond tip, bullet tip, gourd tip, full syringe tip and half syringe tip. I personally use the bullet tip, which is also the most common. I have also used the full syringe tip, and it feels bad. So even if it is a gel pen, you may encounter things that you find difficult to write with or don't like. Don't generalize and refuse to use gel pens from now on.

(3) Type of pen holder. There are so many varieties, comfort is the best, and many are retractable, making them easier to use.
