I will summarize some misunderstandings in calligraphy practice, that is, the detours that are usually taken when practicing calligraphy:
1. Font selection
Most people who are not professionals will not know much about calligraphy fonts. In hard-pen calligraphy, common fonts include official script, regular script, running script, cursive script, etc. It is easy to see that for exam preparation, official script and cursive script are absolutely indispensable. For running script and regular script, some people have appeared in the choice. Mistakes often involve pursuit of chicness and speed, thinking that it will be used in future work. Signing and writing articles will be very beautiful. Many people choose running script or regular script, but often these people get half the result with half the effort, or even have no effect, and consume a lot of money. It takes a lot of time, and running script or regular script are not suitable fonts for exams. Some people often take this detour. So, you may ask, where do you start practicing calligraphy? The editor can say responsibly, the answer is regular script. Regular script is thick, stable, and has a clear center of gravity. Therefore, writers with weak foundation should start with regular script and gradually change fonts, because regular script is the foundation of all calligraphy styles.
2. Select with pen
The choice of pen is very important. As the saying goes: "If you want to do your work well, you must first sharpen your tools." There are many types of pens for hard-pen calligraphy, mainly including fountain pens, ballpoint pens, gel pens, etc. Writers can use them according to their own preferences. Depending on the requirements of the work, choose the appropriate pen, but the editor here explains that if your calligraphy has not reached a certain level, please choose a fountain pen. If you use a fountain pen well, you can write well with other pens.
3. Copybook and Paper Selection
For copybooks, there are several types that cannot be chosen. Everyone must pay attention to them. One is groove writing. It is impossible for this kind of copybook to achieve the purpose through intuitive restrictions on people's writing habits; the other is magic pen type. You can't even choose copybooks because you can't observe whether there is progress, and it often has no effect. For beginners, you can choose tracing copybooks or calligraphy tutorials. Of the two, I recommend the latter the most. In short, it is comparison writing. Although it sounds like the stupidest method, it is actually the most efficient. This method uses paper. It is recommended that beginners use Hui Gong grid. It is easier to control the center of gravity. Moreover, the grid of Hui Gong grid is larger, which is suitable for beginners to write large characters. If they write large characters well, small characters will naturally not be a problem.
4. Practice by writing
Practice, the Chinese definition means practice, training, and calligraphy practice is a process of learning and mastering writing skills. This process requires repeated practice over a long period of time and also requires constant correction of mistakes; it is like you are a new recruit who needs to learn Goose-stepping, then the instructor will demonstrate the movements for you at the beginning, and then you will repeat the previous movements, and then the instructor will modify the movements you repeated. This repeated process will only be representative when it is repeated enough times without errors. You have mastered the skill of goose-stepping. Many calligraphy learners often only repeat the action without correcting this step. The result is the same mistake repeated countless times, but many people still enjoy it and even move themselves to write. The final result is to run away. People on major platforms asked why it was useless for me to practice for so long. The answer I got was still "practice", so I went back to writing, and so on.
Remember, writing is not about practicing. Practice is about correcting your wrong writing skills until you learn it. Don’t do useless work.
