I am 28 years old and my calligraphy is very poor. I have enough time to practice calligraphy. I want to practice hard-pen calligraphy seriously, but because I have no foundation, I don’t know where to start. Should I practice block script or running script?

There is still a slight connection between regular script and running script. For inexperienced beginners, learning regular script first can help you have a deeper understanding of the overall structure of the characters. Writing running script will become more comfortable, and your understanding of hard-pen calligraphy will also improve. To be more comprehensive, of course you can practice Xingkai first. My suggestion is to practice regular script while spending a small amount of time practicing the simple radicals of Xingkai, and then slowly adjust the practice time of both according to time. I have been practicing for several years and now I practice a lot of regular script and the time I spend practicing regular script is relatively short.

Because I am an adult and have been writing calligraphy for so many years. How can I still practice regular script well? You probably don’t have the patience anymore, so you can also start with regular script and running script.

How to practice?

First of all, you can go to the bookstore and buy a calligraphy book. I remember that one copy should cost about 5 yuan. There are many, such as the Three Character Classic and the Golden Classic of Quotations. You can practice calligraphy and learn something at the same time.

After tracing for a while, you can try the Lin method, which is to write in contrast. It is not difficult to practice calligraphy well. What is difficult is to be willing to spend time and use your brain to learn.
