Yang Yisun (1812-1881), a calligrapher of the Qing Dynasty, was born in Changshu, Jiangsu Province. In the 23rd year of Daoguang's reign, he was promoted to the magistrate of Fengyang. He is good at seal script and official script and has profound academic ability.
"In the Past" is an important calligraphy treatise by Yang Yisun, written in a four-character poem. It discusses the relationship between philology and ancient calligraphy, and comments on important paleographers and ancient calligraphers in the past dynasties.
