"Su Xiaoci's Epitaph", also known as "Su Ci's Epitaph", "Su Shijun's Epitaph", etc., was engraved in the third year of Renshou in the Sui Dynasty (603). The epitaph is square, with a side length of 83 centimeters, thirty-seven lines, and three lines. Seventeen words. It was unearthed in Pucheng County, Shaanxi Province in the 14th year of Guangxu's reign in the Qing Dynasty (1888). The original stone is now in the Pucheng County Museum of Shaanxi Province.
The calligraphy of this Zhi is neat and beautiful, the characters are strict, the spirit is steep, and the style is similar to the European style. It is a representative work of regular script calligraphy in the Sui Dynasty and a pioneer of Ouyang Xun's line of regular script in the Tang Dynasty. Because the epitaph was unearthed late, the writing is clear and is valued by the world.
Qingmao Zhifeng commented in the ninth volume of "A Study of the Presence and Existence of Epigraphic Inscriptions in Guanzhong": "This Zhikai regular script is extremely refined and robust, and it is indeed an excellent engraving. It builds on the regular script of the Sui people and combines the achievements of Wei and Qi, as well as the pioneers of Kaiou and Yu. It is calm and cheerful. There are places where people from the Tang Dynasty cannot go."
After the zhi was unearthed, the county magistrate Zhang Rongsheng added two lines of postscript under the word "曰" in the 31st line of "文曰". After that, the postscript was chiselled out again, which can be clearly seen in the entire paper rubbing. Gouge marks.
The extant rubbings can be divided into: the original rubbings without inscriptions, the ones with inscriptions, and the chiseled inscriptions. There are three dots the size of sesame seeds arranged horizontally under the "Wen Yue" in the initial rubbings, and the stone surface is smooth and undamaged. Because Zhang Rongsheng cut off the postscript shortly after he carved it, the original copy of the postscript is rarer than the original one.
