Huang Tingjian (1045.8.9-1105.5.24), courtesy name Luzhi and nicknamed Valley Taoist, was a famous writer and calligrapher in the Northern Song Dynasty. He was the founder of the Jiangxi Poetry School, which flourished for a time. Together with Zhang Lei, Chao Buzhi, and Qin Guan, they all studied under Su Shi's sect, and they were collectively known as the "Four Scholars of the Su School". During his lifetime, he was as famous as Su Shi and was known as "Su Huang" in the world. Huang Tingjian's calligraphy is also unique, and he is one of the "Four Calligraphers of the Song Dynasty".

Among the avant-garde artists in the middle and late Northern Song Dynasty, Huang Tingjian may be regarded as the best. It is not easy to get rid of Su Shi's influence. As the eldest disciple of the Su family, Huang Tingjian not only created a new style of poetry and established a sect, but he was also able to not be limited by his master's calligraphy. He not only transcended the generations, but also competed with the ancients. He was truly a man of great ambition and a good scholar.

"Flower Energy Smells People"
Album pages, paper, vertical: 30.7 cm, horizontal: 43.2 cm

One day around 1100 AD, in his later years, Huang Tingjian was confused by the fact that he was middle-aged. He was practicing retreat at home. Suddenly someone sent flowers all over the house. The person who sent the flowers was the consort Wang Mian, because Huang Tingjian had promised to write poems to Wang Mian, but had not received them for a long time, so he sent flowers to remind Huang Tingjian.

But he didn't expect that the flower energy completely disrupted Huang Tingjian's meditation, so "Flower Energy Smells People" was written out of the blue!

The scent of flowers makes people want to break Zen, but the mood is actually past middle age.
When spring comes, poems and thoughts are like a boat on the water on the eight-section beach.

Appreciation: "When the fragrance of the flowers bloomed, my meditation was broken by the rich fragrance of the flowers. Now that I am in middle age, I don't want to be disturbed, but you sent these flowers in the spring to urge me to write poems. But I don’t know that my current state is like a small boat bumping and wandering in the countercurrent of Bajie Beach.”

The second line of this post is still heavy on the cursive lines, and seems to be restrained. From the third line onwards, it is full of splendor and naturalness, and there is no deliberate effort in the stipple painting, which is extremely natural and wonderful. The writing style of the work is concise and full of charm, the knots are dangerous and the words are steady. It can be said to be graceful and elegant in its own way.

"Hua Qi Summons" is Huang Shangu's most touching work, with the romantic atmosphere of accidental desire to write and the beauty of simplicity. In his later years, he has reached the state of free will and realizes that his words can travel through time and space and communicate from heart to heart. This calligraphy is also one of the most artistic among the ancient posters.

Work details:

At this time, Huang Tingjian's cursive calligraphy art had reached the level of proficiency. At this time, cursive calligraphy was highly praised by Zhang Xu and Huai Su for its flying and free charm, but also had its own style. The writing style is tight and sharp, with sharp and thin strength, strong momentum and various changes in structure.

This post is about beauty and charm, which is different from other works in the valley. Savor it carefully, the inspiration brought by flowers is wonderful!
