Inner court calligraphy of the Qing Dynasty began to flourish from Kangxi. Kangxi received Chinese cultural education from an early age. During his reign, he attached great importance to cultural construction and organized the compilation of large-scale books such as "Collection of Ancient and Modern Books", "Complete Poems of the Tang Dynasty", "Peiwen Yunfu", and "Kangxi Dictionary". Xuan Ye once had Shen Quan, who was good at calligraphy and studied Dong Qichang, as his teacher. Under his influence, he also highly praised Dong Qichang's style and "searched for all the authentic works in the country."
Kangxi's calligraphy is also entirely based on Dong's style. It is soft and beautiful but contains an elegant demeanor, but it has lost the charm of Dong's calligraphy. He was very proud of his calligraphy. He often wrote letters to be presented to ministers and foreign envoys. He tried to write the three characters "Qing Shen Qin", copied them on stones, and gave rubbings to ministers at home and abroad. He also wrote "Teacher for All Times" for the Confucius Temple in Qufu, Shandong. The four characters were inscribed on a plaque for Bailu Academy in Lushan, Jiangxi, and awarded to academies all over the world with the four characters "Xue Da Xing Tian".

Qianlong loved calligraphy, and Heshen deliberately imitated Qianlong's calligraphy. His calligraphy was very similar to Qianlong's imperial pen. In the later period of Qianlong's reign, some poems and plaques were inscribed by Heshen, which was simply written by Heshen. This shows Heshen's calligraphy skills.
