Huai Su (737-799), a calligrapher of the Tang Dynasty. His common surname is Qian and his courtesy name is Zangzhen. A native of Lingling (Changsha), Hunan. Because the three families were monks, they were called "Lingling Monk" and "Shi Changsha" in the history of writing. In the third year of Emperor Dali of the Tang Dynasty (768), when Huaisu had just passed his thirtieth year, he "hated that he could not see the miracles of his predecessors from a distance, and his sight was very shallow", so he went to Beijing with Zhang Wei, the governor of Tanzhou, an acquaintance of Fang Nei, and "visited the famous princes of our time". , it’s all complicated.” Four years later, Huaisu left Beijing to return to his hometown to visit relatives. Passing by Luoyang, he happened to meet Yan Zhenqing, a great calligrapher at that time, and learned from Yan the calligraphy skills of Zhang Xu, a master of cursive calligraphy. Before leaving, Yan also wrote a "Preface to Songs in Cursive Script by Master Huaisu" as a gift and expressed great appreciation for his cursive writing. In the eleventh year of the Dali calendar, when Huaisu was 40 years old and in his prime, he began to summarize his experience in studying and creating Kuangcao, and recorded the evaluation of him by famous officials at that time. This is the masterpiece handed down from generation to generation, "Autobiography", which brought his artistic attainments to the level of perfection.

According to records, the background of Huaisu writing "The Sutra of Forty-Two Chapters" is as follows: In the thirteenth year of the Dali calendar, the 42-year-old Huaisu, encouraged by the wonderful description of Yandang Mountain in the Buddhist scriptures, devoted himself to Yandang Mountain, so he carried it on his back He started his journey to the south with a simple bag containing "Qiuhao Cocoon Paper". In the autumn of this year, he traveled to Yandang Mountain and stayed at Yandang Jingshe, where he received a warm and considerate reception. He enjoyed viewing the strange peaks, strange rocks, giant peaks and waterfalls of Yandang and felt very comfortable. When the abbot of the Jingshe who admired Huaisu's name asked him for a book as a souvenir, he happily copied the Hinayana classic "Forty-Two Chapter Sutra" with his fine cursive calligraphy.

In AD 67, Buddhism was introduced to China. The Sutra of Forty-Two Chapters is the first Buddhist sutra carried on a white horse, one thousand nine hundred and forty years ago.
The "Huaisu Kuangcao Sutra of Forty-Two Chapters" composed of famous scriptures, famous monks and famous traces can be described as the "three wonders".

This long scroll of Buddhist scriptures in cursive script is about 3 feet long, with a total of 248 lines and 2,663 characters. It is said that it was acquired by Zen Master Dajue in the Northern Song Dynasty. In the 1920s, it was collected by Zhou Lian and Pu Yongqing from Wuxi, Jiangsu Province. In 1928, this volume was included in "A View of Ink Marks of Ancient and Modern Celebrities" published by Zhonghua Book Company. At the back of the volume, there is a postscript by Zen Master Dajue, which says: "The master's writings are wonderful both ancient and modern. He strokes his pen vertically and horizontally, flicks the brush with lightning, and the strange rain and strong wind change at will, making it invisible and unpredictable..." The great painter Xu Beihong is in his painting. "Huai Su's Writings on Banana Leaves" even says: "The forty-two chapters of the Tibetan Sutra are unprecedented and unprecedented. It should be written with the eyes of the Buddha in mind."

1 At that time, the World-Honored One, having attained Enlightenment, thought as follows: Freedom from desire and tranquility are the most winning. Stay in great meditation and subdue all evil ways. Let me turn the wheel of Dharma and save all sentient beings in Sarnath. I turned the Dharma Wheel of the Four Noble Truths for Chen Ru and other five people. And realize the fruit of Taoism. Then there was a bhikkhu again

2 Talk about all the doubts and stop them. The World Honored One taught and taught enlightenment. Put your palms together to make a promise, and obey the edict. At that time, the World Honored One spoke. Chapter 42 of the True Scripture. The Buddha said: Resign one's relatives and become a monk, become a Taoist, know the mind, understand the origin, understand

3 The unconditioned dharma is called the Samana. Regularly practice the two hundred and fifty precepts, which are the Four True Paths, and have pure ambitions, and become an Arhat. The Buddha said: An Arhat can fly and change, and his lifespan can move the heaven and earth. Next is Anagami. Anagami's life will last for nineteen days. Yu Petera

4 Arhat. Next is Si Tuohan. If you go up and return at the same time, you will become an Arhat. Next is Sotapanna. A Sotapanna can achieve Arhatship after seven deaths and seven lives. When love and desire are cut off, it is like cutting off the four limbs and no longer using them. The Buddha said: Those who become monks should abandon their desires and love, and know themselves.

5. The origin of the mind is to reach the Buddha’s profound principles and understand the Buddha’s inaction. Nothing to gain within, nothing to seek from outside. If the mind is not attached to the Tao, it will not be completed. No thoughts, no actions, no practice, no realization. I don't care about everyone, but I respect myself the most. It's called Tao. The Buddha said: Shave off your beard and hair, become a recluse, and receive the Buddha

6 The Dharma is the one who gives away wealth and begs to get enough. One meal in the day and one night under the tree, be careful no more! What makes people stupid is love and desire. The Buddha said: Living beings regard ten things as good and ten things as evil. Which one is ten? Three for the body, four for the mouth, and three for the mind.

7 The three bodies include killing, stealing and sexual intercourse. The four types of speech include double-tongue, curses, lies, and idle talk. The third meaning is jealousy, hatred and ignorance. If you don't believe in the three deities, you will regard evil as truth, your upasaka will be in a state of deeds, you will not understand the five things, and you will retreat to the ten things. Buddha said: People have many faults, but they never regret or stop.

8 Stop the mind, and sin will return to you; just like water returning to the sea, it has its own depth and breadth, how can it be avoided? Knowing that there is evil will not lead to good deeds, sin will be eliminated, and you will achieve enlightenment later. The Buddha said: If people are foolish and think that I am not good, I will protect and help them with the four levels of kindness. If they do evil, I will show them the most

9 The aura of good deeds and good fortune is always here, while the aura of harm and disaster is there. There was a fool who heard the Buddha's teachings, maintained great kindness, came with evil and went with good, so he came to scold the Buddha. The Buddha remained silent and did not answer. He was so stupid and ignorant, so he scolded and asked: "You treat people with courtesy. This person is a fool." Not satisfied, real

10 Li Ruzhihu said: Hold on and return. I won’t accept your scolding today, so I will bring disaster upon myself! Still responding to the sound, the shadow chases the shape, and will inevitably leave, so be careful of doing evil. The Buddha said: Evil people who harm sages are like looking up to heaven and spitting. Spitting does not pollute heaven, but it pollutes one's own body. Going against the wind will kill people,

11 If the dust does not sweat, it will return to the body. A wise man cannot be destroyed, and disaster will destroy him. The Buddha said: Madam, she is a Taoist, she is devoted to charity, she is compassionate and virtuous, she is extremely generous, she keeps her will and follows the Tao, her blessings are great. When I see people doing alms, I am happy to help them, and I also receive blessings. I say: That blessing

12 Shouldn’t it be destroyed? The Buddha said: Just like a torch, thousands and hundreds of people use torches to take the fire away. Cooked food will eliminate the ghosts, and the fire will remain the same; blessings will also be the same. The Buddha said: A hundred ordinary people are not as good as one good person; a thousand good people are not as good as one person who upholds the Five Precepts;

13 Ten thousand people who uphold the five precepts are not as good as one sotapanna; one million sotapannas are not as good as one stokham; tens of millions of status are not as good as one anagami; one million anāgāmi is not as good as one. It is not as good as eating one Arahant; eating one billion Arahants is not as good as

14 Just like eating one Pratyekabuddha, eating hundreds of millions of Pratyekabuddhas is not as good as eating one Buddha. Studying is not about seeking Buddhism, it is about helping all living beings, eating good people is the most profound blessing, respecting ordinary people, serving the ghosts and gods of heaven and earth, it is better to be filial to one's two relatives, which is the most divine thing. The Buddha said: It is better to feed a hundred evil people than to feed one good person;

15 Buddha said: There are twenty difficulties in the world. It is difficult to give alms to the poor, it is difficult to learn Taoism when rich and powerful, it is difficult to judge one's fate and not die, it is difficult to read Buddhist scriptures, it is difficult to be reborn in the Buddha's world, it is difficult to endure sex and turn away from desires, it is difficult not to seek after seeing good things, it is difficult not to face difficulties when one is powerful, it is difficult not to be angry when being humiliated, and it is difficult to get into trouble. No worries, learn widely

16 It is difficult to study extensively, it is difficult not to underestimate what has not been learned, it is difficult to eradicate self-conceit, it is difficult to know the good teacher, it is difficult to see one's nature and learn the Tao, it is difficult to be immobile in facing the situation, it is difficult to understand expedients well, it is difficult to follow people's transformation, it is difficult to be equal in mind and conduct, it is difficult not to Say it's a criticism.

17 A recluse asked: How did the Buddha attain enlightenment? How do you know your destiny? The Buddha said: The Tao has no form, and it is useless to know it. You must keep your aspirations and actions. It's like polishing a mirror, removing the dirt and leaving it clear, that is, you can see your own form. If you cut off desires and keep emptiness, you can see the truth of the Tao and know your destiny.

18 Buddha said: What is good? Only do good deeds. Which one is the biggest? The combination of ambition and Tao is great. Which one has more power? The strongest thing is to endure humiliation. If a ninja has no evil, he will be respected by others. Which one is the clearest? The defilements in the heart are removed, the evil deeds are eliminated, and the inner mind is pure and flawless. There is no heaven and earth, caught today, in the ten directions.

19 Everything is not invisible, everything is known, everything is seen, everything is heard, everything is wise, it can be said to be clear! The Buddha said: A person who harbors love and desire but does not see the way is like turbid water, throwing five colors into it and trying to stir it up. When everyone comes together, no shadow can be seen on the water. Eros

20 Interlaced, the mind is turbid, so it cannot see the way. If a person gradually understands and repentes, and comes close to the water of knowledge, and the filth has been removed, and it becomes pure and untainted, he will see his true form. A fierce fire ignites under the cauldron, and the water in it is jumping up and down. Cover it with a cloth, and all living beings will shine on it, but no one can see its shadow. There are three poisons in the heart.

21 When the boil is inside and the five coverings are outside, the path is no longer visible. The evil and evil defilements are gone, and you know where the soul follows, where it will go in the next life and death, where the Buddha's land is, and where morality resides. The Buddha said: If you are a Taoist, you are like holding a torch and letting fire into a dark room. The darkness will be destroyed, but the light will still remain. Learn the Tao

22 When you see the truth, all ignorance and delusion are eliminated, and everything is clear. The Buddha said: Why do I think about the Tao, why do I practice the Tao, why do I talk about the Tao, why do I think about the truth, and never forget it even for a moment! The Buddha said: When you see the heaven and the earth, think very deeply. See the mountains and rivers,

23 Think very much. Seeing the form of all things, I have intense thoughts. If you have such an attachment, you will suffer from Taoism. Buddha said: It takes one day. Always read Tao and practice. The Tao then acquires the root of nature, and its blessings are immeasurable. The Buddha said: Once you are familiar with the four elements in your body,

24 Everyone has a name, and they all have no self. It doesn't take long for it to become parasitic, and it's like a hallucination! The Buddha said: People follow their desires and seek fame, just like burning incense. Everyone smells the incense, but the incense burns itself. Foolish people are greedy for the reputation of the common people, and do not care about the incense.

25 If you keep the Tao, your true glory will endanger yourself, and you will regret it later. The Buddha said: Wealth and beauty are like a child greedy for honey on the edge of a knife. The sweetness is not enough to taste the beauty of a meal, but there is also the danger of amputating one's tongue.

26 The Buddha said: A man is more troubled by the shackles of his wife's treasured house than by the shackles of a prison. There is no pardon in Langgdang Prison. Although the wife's lust is a danger, she is still willing to surrender, and her crime will not be pardoned.

27 Buddha said: There is nothing more passionate than lust. Color is desire, and it is infinite and depends on one thing. If the two are the same, all the people in the world will be unable to follow the path. Buddha said: Love and desire for people are like holding a torch and walking against the wind. If a fool does not let go of the torch, his hands will be burned.

28 problems. The poisons of greed, lust, anger, ignorance and delusion are in the human body. Those who do not use the Way to eliminate these disasters early will be in danger. It's like a fool holding a torch with greed will burn his own hand. At that time, a god offered a jade girl to the Buddha, wanting to test it.

29 Buddha means observing the Buddha's way. The Buddha said: The leather bag is so filthy, what are you doing here? You can cheat on the customs, but it is difficult to use the six skills, so go! I don't need you. The gods respect the Buddha more and more because they ask for his thoughts. The Buddha explains it and obtains Sotapanna.

30 The Buddha said: A man who is a Taoist is like a tree in water, seeking the current and walking along it. It will not touch the shore to the left or right, it will not be taken by people, it will not be covered by ghosts and gods, it will not be inhabited by migrating currents, and it will not be corrupted. I will protect it from entering the sea. People should follow the Tao, not be deceived by lust, and not fall prey to evil.

31 What he has deceived is that if he works diligently, I will ensure that he attains the path. The Buddha told the ascetics: Be careful not to believe your will, for your will will never be trusted. Be careful not to associate with lust, as lust will bring disaster. If you have attained the path of Arahant, you can trust it. The Buddha told all ascetics: Be careful to ignore women.

32 Seeing caution, there is nothing to say. If you speak to those who teach you how to behave uprightly, you may say that as a recluse, I am living in a troubled world and should be like a lotus flower, not stained by mud. The older one is like a mother, the older one is like a sister, the younger one is like a sister, and the younger one is like a daughter. Respect him with courtesy, the meaning is special, but

33 Looking from head to foot, looking within oneself, where is the other body? It only contains lochia and all impure seeds to explain its meaning. The Buddha said: If you are a human being, you should get rid of your desires like grass. When you see the fire coming, it will be a calamity. When Taoists see love and desire, they must

34 Stay away. The Buddha said: When a person suffers from lingering sexual desires, he should sit on the blade of an ax to remove the evil from himself. The Buddha said: If you want to cut off the Yin, it is not as good as cutting off the mind. The heart is the Cao Cao of merit. If the Cao Cao of merit is stopped, all followers will cease. If the evil intention persists, why should Yin be cut off?

35 benefit? Death is imminent. The Buddha said: The world sees such madness. People have adulterous children. The girl and the boy swear to the due date and regret it if they don't come. I want me to know your true intention, but I don't think about it because of my thoughts. If I think about you, I will, but I won't. When a Buddha is born, he practices the Way and hears it, he calls it sand

36 The disciple said: Remember, this verse of Kasyapa Buddha is popular among the common people. The Buddha said: People's desires lead to worry, and worries lead to fear. To be without love is to be worry-free, and to be without worries is to be fearless? The Buddha said: Mankind is like a man fighting against ten thousand people.

37 When a soldier is commanded by armor, he goes out wanting to fight, but his mind is timid and timid, so he retreats. Either return halfway, or die in a fight, or win a great victory, and return to the country at a high level. If the lady can keep her heart firmly in mind, carry out the battle with vigor, and not be confused by the deceitful words of the common people, if she wants to eliminate all evil, she must

38 You have achieved enlightenment. There is a monk who chants sutras at night, his voice is sad and tight, and he wants to regret and return. The Buddha called to the ascetics and asked him: What should you cultivate at home? He said: Always play the piano. Buddha said: How about the string being slow? Said: No more singing! What's wrong with the string?

39 Said: The sound is gone! What's the point of slowness and success? Said: All sounds are universal! The Buddha told the ascetics: It is still possible to learn the Tao, and if the attachment is adjusted, the Tao can be obtained. The Buddha said: A lady who is a Taoist is like a wrought iron that gradually becomes deeper and deeper. She removes dirt and becomes a tool. She must be eager to learn the Tao so that it becomes deeper and deeper.

40. Remove the defilements of the mind and work diligently on the path. If you follow the path, your body will be tired. If your body is tired, your mind will be upset. If your mind is upset, you will succeed. If you practice it, you will cultivate your happiness. The Buddha said: Human beings suffer from the Tao, not from the Tao, but also from human beings. From birth to old age, from old age to illness, from illness to death, the suffering is immeasurable.

41 Death never ceases, as its sufferings say. The Buddha said: It is difficult for a lady to escape from the three evil paths. Once you are a human being, it is difficult to get rid of the female and become the male. Once you are a man, it is difficult to have all six emotions. With the six emotions already present, it is difficult to be born in China. Since we are in China, it is difficult to follow the path of Buddhism.

42 Since you follow the way of Buddhism, it is difficult for a ruler who has the way to do so. Since you are a worthy ruler, it is difficult to be born into a Bodhisattva family. Since I was born into the Bodhisattva family, I believe in the three deities with my heart and will be worthy of the Buddha's troubles in the world. The Buddha asked the ascetics: How many lives does a person have? right

43 said: Within a few days. The Buddha said: If you fail to follow the path, you will ask a recluse again: How long is a person's life? He said: In the dining room. Go, Zi failed to follow the path. Another question to a Samana: How many lives does one have? He said: between breaths. Buddha said: Well done, you can be said to be the Tao

That’s 44! The Buddha said: If you, my disciple, are thousands of miles away from me, if you think of my precepts, you will surely attain the path. If you are on my side and your intentions are evil, you will not be able to achieve enlightenment in the end. In fact, if you can do it well but can't do it well, what's the point of it?

45 The Buddha said: Human beings are like eating honey, both the middle and the edge are sweet. My Sutra is also yours, its meanings are all quick, and those who practice it will attain the Way. The Buddha said: People who follow the path can pull out the root of love and desire, just like picking up hanging beads. Pick them one by one and you will

46 There comes a time when all evil is done and the path is attained. The Buddha said: All ascetics walking on the road should be like an ox carrying a burden, walking in deep mud, and they should not dare to look left or right when they are too tired. I want to leave the mud and rest myself. Samanas value lust more than mud. If you recite the truth straight from your heart, you can avoid it.

47 Public suffering. The Buddha said: I regard the position of a prince as a gap in the dust. Treat the treasures of gold and jade as rubble. He regards Wan Su's clothes as coins and silk. See the universe as a myrobalan. Looking at the water all around, it's like applying oil on your feet. Depending on convenience, such as

48 Raft Treasure Gathering. Seeing nothing is superior, like gold and silk in a dream. Seeking the way of Buddhism is like flowers before your eyes. View and seek meditation, like Sumeru. Seeing and seeking nirvana is like day and night. Looking at those who are unrighteous is like six dragons dancing. treat equals

49 True to form. Those who look at Xinghua are like trees in four seasons. I was at Yandang Jingshe when I was looking at the sun in the ninth month of Wuwu autumn in the Dali calendar.

Chapter 42 of the Holy Scripture

The Buddha said: He left home and became a Taoist, understood the mind, understood the unconditioned dharma, and was called a Samana. In Peter Arahant. Next is Si Tuohan. If you go up and return at the same time, you will become an Arhat. Next is Sotapanna. A Sotapanna can achieve Arhatship after seven deaths and seven lives. When love and desire are cut off, it is like cutting off the four limbs and no longer using them.

The Buddha said: Those who become monks should abandon their desires and love, recognize the source of their own heart, understand the profound principles of the Buddha, and realize the inaction of the Buddha. Nothing to gain within, nothing to seek from outside. If the mind is not attached to the Tao, it will not be completed. No thoughts, no actions, no practice, no realization. I don't care about everyone, but I respect myself the most. It's called Tao.

The Buddha said: Those who shave off their beards and hair, become ascetics, and receive the Dharma, will die and beg for their wealth. One meal in the day and one night under the tree, be careful no more! What makes people stupid is love and desire.

The Buddha said: Living beings regard ten things as good and ten things as evil. Which one is ten? Three for the body, four for the mouth, and three for the mind. The third body is killing, stealing, and committing adultery.

The Buddha said: People who have made many mistakes and do not regret themselves or stop their thoughts will return to their bodies because of their sins. Just like water returning to the sea, it has its own depth and breadth. How can it be avoided? Knowing that there is evil will not lead to good deeds, sin will be eliminated, and you will achieve enlightenment later.

The Buddha said: People are foolish enough to think that I am not good, so I use the four levels of loving-kindness to protect and help them. If evil comes, I use the good energy to lead to merit, which is always here, and the harmful energy is there. There was a fool who heard the Buddha's teachings, maintained great kindness, came with evil and went with good, so he came to scold the Buddha. The Buddha remained silent and did not answer. He was so stupid and ignorant, so he scolded and asked: "You treat people with courtesy. This person is a fool." If you don't accept it, the truth is the same, and you say: Hold on and return.

The wind is blowing against someone, and the dust is not sweating from them, and they are still hurting themselves.

I ask, "Shouldn't this blessing be destroyed?" The Buddha said: Just like a torch, thousands and hundreds of people use torches to take the fire away. Cooked food will eliminate the ghosts, and the fire will remain the same; blessings will also be the same.

The Buddha said: A hundred ordinary people are not as good as one good person; a thousand good people are not as good as one person who upholds the five precepts; ten thousand people who uphold the five precepts are not as good as one sotapanna; a million sotapannas are not as good as one stupana. ; Tens of millions of rice-bearing Buddhas are not as good as one rice-anagami; One hundred million rice-food anagami is not as good as one rice-Arahant; One billion rice-food Arahants is not as good as one rice-rice Pratyekabuddha; Ten billions of rice-food Pratyekabuddhas are not as good as one rice-rice Buddha . Studying is not about seeking Buddhism, it is about helping all living beings, eating good people is the most profound blessing, respecting ordinary people, serving the ghosts and gods of heaven and earth, it is better to be filial to one's two relatives, which is the most divine thing. The Buddha said: A hundred evil people are not as good as a good person; a thousand good people are not as good as a person who holds the five precepts; a thousand people who have the five precepts are not as good as a sotapanna; a million sotapannas are not as good as a stupana; Thousands of stuagams are not as good as one anagami. One hundred million anagami is not as good as one arhat. One billion arhats are not as good as one Pratyekabuddha. Buddha: The Buddhas of thousands of billions and three generations are not as good as those who have no thoughts, no abiding, no cultivation, and no realization.

Buddha said: There are twenty difficulties in the world. It is difficult to be unintentional, to study extensively is difficult, not to underestimate the difficulty of not having learned it, to eliminate self-conceit is difficult, to be a good teacher is difficult, to see one's nature is difficult to learn the Tao, to be immobile is difficult to the situation, to be kind to the expedient is difficult, to adapt to the transformation of people is difficult, and the mind conducts Equality is difficult, let alone right and wrong.

A Samana asked: How did the Buddha attain enlightenment? How do you know your destiny? The Buddha said: The Tao has no form, and it is useless to know it. You must keep your aspirations and actions. It's like polishing a mirror, removing the dirt and leaving it clear, that is, you can see your own form. There is no heaven and earth. As of today, everything in the ten directions is not tasted or unseen. I know everything, see everything, hear everything, and gain all wisdom. It can be said to be clear!

The Buddha said: A person who harbors love and desire but does not see the way is like turbid water, throwing five colors into it and trying to stir it up. A fierce fire is burning under the cauldron, and the water in it is jumping up and down. Cover it with cloth, and all living beings will shine on it, but no one can see its shadow. There are three poisons in the heart. From there, the destination of future life and death is the land of the Buddhas, where morality resides.

The Buddha said: If you are a Taoist, you are like holding a torch and letting fire into a dark room. The darkness will be destroyed, but the light will still remain. If you learn the Tao and see the truth, all ignorance and delusion will be eliminated, and everything will be clear.

The older one is like a mother, the older one is like a sister, the younger one is like a sister, and the younger one is like a daughter . Respect him with courtesy, and the meaning is the truth. Just look from head to foot, look inside yourself, where is the other body? It only contains lochia and all impure seeds to explain its meaning.

Since we are in China, it is difficult to follow the path of Buddhism. Since you follow the Buddha's way, it is difficult for a ruler who has the way to do so. Since you are a worthy ruler, it is difficult to be born into a Bodhisattva family. Since I was born into the Bodhisattva family, I believe in the three deities with my heart and will be worthy of the Buddha's troubles in the world.

Seeing nothing is superior, like gold and silk in a dream. Seeking the way of Buddhism is like flowers before your eyes. Seek meditation, like Sumeru . Seeing and seeking nirvana is like day and night. Looking at those who are unrighteous is like six dragons dancing. Treat those who are equal as one. Those who look at Xinghua are like trees in four seasons.
